Jazz legends to play in Viet Nam

Two well-known American jazz artists, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, will tour Viet Nam to perform in HCM City on Saturday and in Ha Noi next Tuesday.

Herbie Hancock, born in Chicago, is a jazz icon who has been an integral part of every jazz movement since his arrival on the scene in 1960s.

His recordings during the 1970s combined electric jazz with funk and rock sounds in an innovative style that influenced a whole decade of music.

Hancock has received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight and 10 Grammy awards.

Many of his compositions are modern standards that have had a profound effect on all styles of modern music.

The 72-year-old saxophonist Wayne Shorter is regarded as one of the most significant and prolific performers and composers in jazz and modern music.

He has an outstanding record of professional achievement in his career as a musician.

Shorter has received substantial recognition from his peers, including eight Grammy awards and 13 other Grammy nominations.

Other artists touring with the two musicians include vocalists Nneena Freelon and Gina Saputo, saxophonists Walter Smith and Tim Green, trumpet player Ambrose Akinmusire, drummer Zach Harmon, bass player Joe Sanders and pianist Romain Collins.

All are from the US’s Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

Besides the performances in two cities, the Americas jazz artists will conduct master classes for students of the Ha Noi and HCM City Conservatories of Music.

The tour is under a cultural programme to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the normalisation of US-Viet Nam diplomatic relations.

The festival, also featuring jazz bands from France, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Luxembourg, is taking place at Ha Noi’s Workers’ Theatre and HCM City Conservatory from November 30 to December 10. — VNS
